Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette was born at Chavaniac, Auvergne, in 1757, to an old, illustrious family of the provincial and military nobility. William Stephens Smith (b. November 8, 1755, Suffolk County, NY–d. June 10, 1816, Lebanon, NY) was a United States Representative from New York. He married Abigail "Nabby" Adams, the daughter of President John Adams, and was a brother-in-law of President John Quincy Adams. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1774. He served in the Revolutionary Army as aide-de-camp to general John Sullivan in 1776.
